Ellen Carey/MATRIX 153: Photography Degree Zero October 31, 2004 through Spring 2005

For MATRIX 153 Carey will present a newly executed body of photographs. Using the world's largest instant camera, the Polaroid 40 X 80, Carey has creatred a series of monumental "pulls," which defy all preconceived notions of photographic reality. Such is the inherent contradiction of minimalist photography and the wonder of Ellen Carey's work - that in exposing the physical nature of the medium itself, the resulting image becomes something altogether foreign, bearing almost no resemblance to what we traditionally consider to be a photograph. Ellen Carey will give an artist talk on Thursday, November 4 at 6 p.m. in The Hartford Courant Room at the museum. Meet the artist and learn how she's transformed the way we think about photography. Informal conversations in the galleries will follow the talk. Free with museum admission.
